Yesterday night I realized a long cherished wish of seeing one of my fav Telugu movies starring NTR and SVR-Bhookailas. Bhookailas was  in my list coz of one reason.  The protagonist was Ravana.

I have a fascination for Ravana, the demon king and had often wondered what he would be, minus his weaknesses.  This film gave a fantastic picture of what he would have been, thanks to superb team work by one and all.

The story in a nut shell-Ravana’s quest to obtain the Atma Linga for his mother Kaikasi and how he meets Mandodari and marries her. This  story line is presented in an admirable way by the crew. Those of you who have read the Indian mythologies and epics, especially Ramayana, will understand what a great personality Ravana was.

In those days(1958), this film was a milestone in many ways. The story with a villainous character as like Ravana as hero was a trendsetter in Telugu movies.  The way NTR potrayed the role with compassion and dignity made you wonder at his historinics(he was so young then).  The trend of a popular hero like NTR taking on a Pratinayaka‘s(villain) role was unheard of.  The banner(AVM) was well known in taking risk and turning dust into gold.  And the result was magic.  Absolute magic.

Every one of the actors deserve applause.  Especially NTR, SVR, ANR  for the competitive acting they displayed. The music is still a hit among lovers today, especially ‘Deva deva’, ‘Neelakandara‘ are my favourites. Ghantasala has done magic in the number Deva deva by excellently modulating his voice in two different voice tones, a phenomenon common today, but unheard of then. The lilting music is a definite go among listeners.

Do get a copy of the DVD or watch for the movie to be telecast.  You will love it.  Especially Teluguvads.
